MARLON NICOLAU INTERVIEW

Styling and Interview by Susana Jacobetty
Clothes by Nycole FW1718
with Marlon Nicolau Elite Lisbon

Are you Marlon because of Marlon Brando?
The story of my name is curious, but it did not arise because of the actor. My father, an illustrious sportinguista (Sporting Club of Portugal, soccer club), thought it was best to give me the name of a Brazilian forward playing at Alvalade at that time. And so it was.

How did fashion come your way?
It came quite unexpectedly. I was already aware, because of the insistence of some friends and family on how tall and how I looked, but in my head I only saw it as a joke. Later a small contest came up in my town, where a friend of mine signed me up and who had a Just Models booker in the jury. I did not win the contest, but I was invited to go to the agency and be hired soon.

Do you think that there is still some prejudice with model men?
Prejudice I do not say, but there is still a small stereotype that encompasses male mannequins. But it is most felt outside the circle of fashion, with the general public. But I do not think it's a cause for concern. We all live by stereotypes, catalogs and associations. This is just one in the midst of so many others.

What do you like the most in the fashion world and what do you like less? Traveling is undoubtedly what I like most. To be able to travel and to know, not only new places, but also people and experiences. What I like the least, is the waiting time. In castings, in shows, in jobs, even in airports. They make us wait a lot. It's annoying, ahahah.

Who are your creators of choice?
In Portugal I think that the new creators have appeared with great talent in recent times. Nycole and David Catalán are my favourites when it comes to menswear. There are many creators out there that I really like because they excel at the simplicity of the materials they use. Neil Barret and Alexander Wang are some examples of what I prefer.

For you, in Portugal, which are the best models in the feminine and masculine?
It's a bit of an ungrateful question because I do not really have preferences in that regard. I think so is that there are several emerging talents, both male and female, at this time. Many of them already with enough evidence and that every day that passes, represent better and better the Portuguese blood outside.

Tell us an unforgettable moment that you have lived during your career as a model?
It is a bit of a cliché, but it is difficult to choose one among the many that I hold dearly. Fortunately, good times were not lacking as well as good experiences. On a professional level, probably the most striking was when I was able to work directly with Miss Prada (Miuccia Prada), in fittings for the menswear collection.
Your look is quite alternative, tell us the truth, do you have some special care of beauty?
Not properly. What I do in that sense is what we should all do by default, I think. A careful diet based on vegetables and fruit, very little meat, a simple moisturizing cream, lots of water, lots of laughter and lots of love. Simple.

Do you have enough tattoos and piercings, what motivates you to do them? Do you think that someday you'll get fed up with tattoos and regret the reamers?
Special reason has never been more than my spontaneous madness to want to do it. I never thought much about doing it. If I wanted, I would. And it has always been like this with all the tattoos and piercings.
Repentance I do not have, nor do I think I will have. Even because each tattoo and each piercing has a story behind. But yes, it may be the case that the reamers no longer make as much sense as I think they do now. But I do not think much of it for now. If I ever think that they're not already part of me, it's the day I take them off.

What do you do beyond your model life? Do you study? Do you work? Do you have any activity?
I had college while traveling at the beginning of my career. I ended up not being able to finish the course because of the workflow and because I ended up never being in the country at the time of the delivery of the papers and the exams.
Here in Portugal I do not make fashion a full time job, so I always have some parallel activities, but always related to this world.
If I do some activity, like sport? No, unfortunately not. I walk a lot daily, I love walking everywhere. But I really don't do anything at the moment. I did swimming and soccer for many years. And I'm living with it, ahahah.
